How does Nerivio work?

The Nerivio device uses REN, (remote electrical neuromodulation) to activate the body’s natural pain-regulatory system with gentle electrical stimulation to relieve migraine pain and migraine symptoms.

Is Nerivio a TENS device?

No, Nerivio is not a TENS device and should not be confused with Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation (TENS)

Nerivio inhibits the pain in a remote body region by using Remote Electrical Neuromodulation (REN) and ascends up the spinal cord into the brainstem triggering the Conditioned Pain Modulation (CPM) – an analgesic effect in the brainstem pain regulation center, which is the body’s endogenous mechanism for pain suppression.

In contrast, TENS inhibits pain locally – in the vicinity of where the TENS is placed and targets sensory nerves outside the central nervous system in an attempt to block pain signals from entering the spinal cord and brain.

Why stimulate the arm to treat a migraine headache?

There is a natural mechanism in the human body by which a noticeable stimulus in one body part can activate a process in the brain that relieves pain in the entire body. Activating this mechanism by stimulating small nerve fibers under the skin of the arm triggers the release of neurotransmitters (norepinephrine and serotonin) from the brain to the Central Nervous System, to globally abort pain.

In order for this mechanism to work – the conditioned stimulation must be remote from the existing pain, the migraine headache. Nerivio uses remote electrical neurostimulation (REN) to activate this natural mechanism externally.

What does the treatment with Nerivio feel like?

The device transmits electrical pulses that feel like tingling.
You will need to set the treatment intensity level by increasing it to the highest level that feels strong yet comfortable and painless. You may feel a strong sensation at first, but it will typically fade to a comfortable level after a couple of seconds. If the sensation is uncomfortable or painful, you should decrease the intensity. During the treatment, you might experience a temporary sensation of warmth, local tingling, numbness in the arm, pain in the arm, or redness of the skin, which should disappear shortly after the end of the treatment. If you experience hand numbness and/or muscle twitching, try changing the location of the electrodes on the arm.

Can I use Nerivio instead or with my medications?

Nerivio is a medication-free device and will not interfere with any medications you are taking. Please consult your healthcare provider to discuss the use of Nerivio® as part of your treatment plan.

Please refer to the Nerivio user manual for important safety and prescribing information.

Can I use Nerivio if I have metal implants?

Nerivio is not contraindicated in patients with implanted metal hardware if there are no associated electronic components. If the hardware is implanted in the arm, we do recommend the patient place the device on the opposite arm.

Please consult your healthcare provider regarding the use of Nerivio in your specific situation.

The Nerivio device should not be used by people with an active implantable medical device, such as a pacemaker, hearing aid implant, neurostimulator or any implanted electronic device. Such use could cause electric shock, electrical interference or serious injuries, or medical conditions.
